Introduction to Age Problems

Age Problems are a regular feature in every Bank (IBPS PO/Clerk, SBI PO/Clerk), SSC (CGL, CHSL, MTS), and Railway (NTPC, Group D) exam. They always fall in the Arithmetic section of Quantitative Aptitude and typically carry 2–4 questions per paper.

The key to solving age problems quickly is understanding the relationship between present age, past age, and future age. If a person's present age is X, then:

Present Age = X | Past Age (n years ago) = X – n | Future Age (n years later) = X + n

Type 1: Basic Age Equation Problems

These involve one or two unknowns and are solved by forming a simple linear equation.

🧮 Example 1: The sum of ages of A and B is 40. After 5 years the ratio of their ages will be 3:2. Find their present ages.

Let A = x, B = 40 – x
After 5 years: (x+5)/(45–x) = 3/2
2(x+5) = 3(45–x)
2x + 10 = 135 – 3x
5x = 125 → x = 25
A = 25 years, B = 15 years ✅
🧮 Example 2: A's age is twice B's age. 10 years ago, A was 4 times B's age. Find present ages.

Let B = x, A = 2x
10 years ago: 2x – 10 = 4(x – 10)
2x – 10 = 4x – 40
30 = 2x → x = 15
B = 15 years, A = 30 years ✅

Type 2: Ratio-Based Age Problems

These are the trickiest type. The ages of two people are in a certain ratio now, and will be in another ratio after some years. Use the "ratio + change" technique.

Key Technique: Let present ages be ax and bx. Actual difference in ages = (a–b)x = constant. Use this to find x.

🧮 Example 3: Present ratio of ages of Ram and Shyam = 3:4. After 8 years ratio = 5:6. Find their present ages.

Let ages be 3x and 4x
(3x+8)/(4x+8) = 5/6
6(3x+8) = 5(4x+8)
18x + 48 = 20x + 40
2x = 8 → x = 4
Ram = 12 years, Shyam = 16 years ✅
💡 Exam Trick (Difference Method): In ratio problems, the actual difference in ages never changes. So difference = 4x – 3x = x. If after 8 years ratio is 5:6, difference = 6k – 5k = k. Since difference is fixed: x = k. This gives you x without forming an equation!

Type 3: Past-Future Age Problems

These ask: "n years ago, a person was m times as old as..." — you simply substitute (X – n) in place of present age X.

🧮 Example 4: Father's age is 3 times his son's age. 12 years ago he was 6 times his son's age. Find their present ages.

Son = x, Father = 3x
12 years ago: 3x – 12 = 6(x – 12)
3x – 12 = 6x – 72
60 = 3x → x = 20
Son = 20, Father = 60 years ✅
🧮 Example 5: After 18 years, Rahul will be 3 times as old as he was 6 years ago. Find Rahul's present age.

Let present age = x
x + 18 = 3(x – 6)
x + 18 = 3x – 18
36 = 2x → x = 18 years ✅

Type 4: Average Age Problems

When age problems combine with average calculations, use the Sum = Average × Count approach.

🧮 Example 6: Average age of a family of 5 members is 25 years. If the youngest member is 10 years old, what was the average age of the family just before the youngest was born?

Present sum = 5 × 25 = 125
10 years ago: Each of the other 4 members was 10 years younger → Sum reduced by 4×10 = 40
Also, the youngest wasn't born → 4 members only
Sum 10 years ago = 125 – 10 (youngest's age) – 40 (others' reduction) = 75
Average 10 years ago = 75/4 = 18.75 years ✅

Type 5: Three-Person Age Problems

These involve three people (father, mother, son; or A, B, C) and require setting up 2–3 equations simultaneously.

🧮 Example 7: A is 2 years older than B who is twice as old as C. If A, B, C are together 27 years old, find B's age.

Let C = x, B = 2x, A = 2x + 2
x + 2x + 2x + 2 = 27
5x = 25 → x = 5
B = 10 years ✅

🚨 Top 4 Mistakes in Age Problems

❌ Mistake 1: Writing "n years ago" as X + n instead of X – n.
✅ Fix: "Ago" = subtract. "Later/Hence/After" = add.
❌ Mistake 2: In ratio problems, assuming ratio stays the same over time.
✅ Fix: The actual difference in ages stays the same — the ratio changes. Always use this property.
❌ Mistake 3: Getting negative age as answer (which is logically impossible).
✅ Fix: If you get a negative answer, you likely set up the equation backwards. Swap the terms and re-solve.

📋 Quick Revision: Age Problem Types

Type Key Approach
Basic equationLet age = x, form equation, solve
Ratio-basedLet ages = ax, bx; difference remains constant
Past/FutureSubstitute X–n (past) or X+n (future)
Average AgeUse Sum = Avg × Count at different time points
Three personsForm 2–3 equations, solve simultaneously

Practice Questions: Age Problems (With Answers)

  1. Present ages of A and B are in ratio 4:5. Eight years ago the ratio was 3:4. Find A's present age.
    Answer: Let 4x, 5x. (4x–8)/(5x–8)=3/4 → 16x–32=15x–24 → x=8. A=32 years
  2. The sum of ages of a mother and son is 45 years. 5 years ago the ratio was 7:2. Find their present ages.
    Answer: 5 yrs ago: 7k+2k=45–10=35 → k=35/9? No — let Mother=m, Son=s. m+s=45, (m–5)/(s–5)=7/2. 2m–10=7s–35 → 2m=7s–25. With m=45–s: 2(45–s)=7s–25 → 90–2s=7s–25 → 115=9s → s=12.78≈13 (approx). Mother=32
  3. Father is 30 years older than son. After 5 years father will be 3 times older. Find son's present age.
    Answer: Son=x, Father=x+30. x+30+5=3(x+5) → x+35=3x+15 → 20=2x → x=10 years
  4. The ratio of the ages of a man and his wife is 4:3. After 4 years the ratio will be 9:7. Find their present ages.
    Answer: 4x, 3x. (4x+4)/(3x+4)=9/7 → 28x+28=27x+36 → x=8. Man=32, Wife=24

Previous Year Questions: Age Problems in Exams

🏦 IBPS PO 2023: The ratio of the present ages of A and B is 5:6. If B is 6 years older than A, what will be the ratio of their ages 6 years hence?
Solution: Difference = 6x–5x = x = 6 years. A=30, B=36. After 6 years: 36:42 = 6:7 ✅
🏦 SBI PO 2022: The average age of 4 children is 12 years. The ratio of their ages is 1:2:3:4. Find the age of the oldest child.
Solution: Sum=4×12=48. Ratio sum=1+2+3+4=10. Oldest=4/10×48=19.2 years ✅

Advanced Age Problem Techniques for IBPS PO Mains

Mains-level age questions often combine age with other concepts like percentage, ratio, and average. Here are techniques to handle such composite questions:

Technique 1: Age + Percentage

If a person's age increases by a certain percentage, convert it to actual years and solve.

Example: A's age 5 years ago was 25% less than B's current age. B's current age is 40 years. Find A's current age.
25% of 40 = 10. A's age 5 years ago = 40 – 10 = 30. A's current age = 30 + 5 = 35 years ✅

Technique 2: Multiple Conditions

Some questions give 3 conditions for 3 people. Set up 3 equations and solve step by step:
